Academic Language Development

Our film-based curriculum integrates literacy strategies that help ELL students strengthen:

  • English vocabulary acquisition through scriptwriting, storyboarding, and on-camera dialogue.

  • Reading comprehension using age-appropriate screenplays, shot lists, and production notes.

  • Writing skills through journaling, reflective exercises, film critiques, and collaborative story development.

  • Speaking and listening skills in group discussions, directing actors, interviewing peers, and presenting their projects.

ELL students practice English in meaningful,

real-world, and creative contexts—helping them build confidence while developing academic language.

Workforce & Digital Literacy Skills

At Harlem Film School, we believe that language should never be a barrier to creativity, self-expression, or academic success. Our programs are intentionally designed to support English Language Learners (ELL) in both middle school and high school, ensuring that all students—regardless of their language background can fully participate, grow, and shine in the world of media arts.

Harlem Film School fosters an inclusive and welcoming classroom community where
ELL students benefit from:

  • A safe space for practicing English without judgment.

  • Activities that build confidence, self-expression, and leadership.

  • Collaborative projects that promote teamwork and positive peer interactions.

  • Supportive adult mentors who understand linguistic and cultural diversity.

Social-Emotional Support

ELL students also gain exposure to essential 21st-century and career-ready skills::

  • Using professional cameras, lighting, and audio equipment.

  • Editing with industry-standard software.

  • Understanding media literacy, digital citizenship, and online safety.

  • Learning about creative careers across film, journalism, marketing, social media,
    and entertainment.

These skills empower students to see themselves as creators, innovators, and future
professionals—regardless of their English proficiency level.

Film-Based Learning for Multilingual Students

Our teaching artists use hands-on filmmaking to create a supportive and engaging learning environment where ELL students:

  • Learn visually through cameras, lighting, editing tools, and multimedia resources.

  • Use their native language as a strength, incorporating bilingual storytelling and  creative expression.

  • Build transferable skills such as sequencing, planning, problem-solving, and creative expression.

Empowering Voices, Celebrating Cultures

Harlem Film School honors the rich cultural and linguistic diversity of New York City
students. Through filmmaking, ELL students discover that their stories matter, their
voices are powerful, and their unique perspectives enrich every production.
