Harlem Film School’s programming is built to uplift students academically, creatively, and socially—perfectly aligning with Project Pivot’s mission to ensure student well-being, safety, and long-term success. Through hands-on media arts education, mentorship, and leadership development, we provide schools with a comprehensive support system across all four focus areas.

Harlem Film School creates a safe, structured, and emotionally supportive environment where students learn to express themselves through storytelling rather than conflict. We also enrich the school day by giving students access to high-quality arts education.

Our Program

  • Students engage in hands-on filmmaking, acting, scriptwriting, media literacy, and digital production.


  • Our classes increase overall student engagement, motivation, and school attendance.


  • Artistic expression helps students discover new passions, talents, and career interests.


  • Collaboration mimics team-based recreation and sports environments, building community and trust.


  • Promotes positive self-expression and emotional regulation through creative outlets.

  • Builds collaboration and conflict-resolution skills during group filmmaking projects.

Media arts naturally cultivate leadership. Our programs empower students to take ownership of the creative process while gaining real-world workforce skills:

 

  • Students rotate through leadership roles such as director, producer, editor, cinematographer, and sound engineer.

  • They develop essential 21st-century skills: communication, digital literacy, problem-solving, and teamwork.

  • Exposure to careers in film, journalism, digital media, marketing, and technology prepares students for the modern workforce.

  • Students build professional portfolios they can use for high school, college, or job applications.

Harlem Film School helps students see themselves not just as learners, but as creators and future professionals.Mentorship is at the heart of our program. Our teaching artists serve as culturally responsive guides who support students academically, creatively, and socially:​

 

  • We provide consistent adult mentorship, strengthening student confidence and resilience.

  • Group storytelling activities give students safe opportunities to process emotions and share their lived experiences.

  • Personalized guidance helps students set goals, manage challenges, and take pride in their growth. ELL students receive additional support in language development, helping them thrive academically and socially.
